When asked what the bestselling book is, the first answer that surely comes to mind is holy books. Not only the Bible but also the Quran and the Book of Mormon have several copies spread around the world.

But not only faith moves the purchase and sale of best sellers, and anyone who thinks best sellers are trendy is wrong. Some of them have already made history on the shelves, even before Queen Victoria was one of the most famous aristocrats of antiquity.

1 – Don Quixote 

The Spanish classic by Miguel de Cervantes is so well known that there is a plenty of references in pop culture. Being quoted in series, movies, and even other books, Don Quixote describes the adventures of a medieval knight, named after the book's title, accompanied by his horse Rocinante and his faithful squire Sancho Panza. 

2 – The Lord of the Rings 

The author, J. R. R. Tolkien, is known as the father of fantasy literature. He creates a peculiar narrative universe by creating fantasy models in a middle earth inhabited by elves, wizards, and many other fantastic creatures. The sequel to The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings has been translated into several languages and adapted for movies, with more than 150 million copies sold worldwide. 

3 – The Dream of the Red Chamber 

It was released in the 18th century and considered one of the four greatest novels in Chinese literature. The story depicts a love triangle within the aristocracy: the protagonist Jia Baoyu and her two cousins, with whom she falls in love. Engaging and captivating, the book transports you to the Qing dynasty, on a true journey through time, knowing the customs and philosophy of the time. 

4 – A Tale of Two Cities 

Based on historical moments after independence until the French Revolution, Charles Dickens' novel avoids bringing his political position and choose to focus his narrative on the social point of view of the characters when the narrative takes place. The book is the main work of the English writer, who uses letters to build the story. 

5 – The Little Prince

This playful and poetic narrative is present in the affective memory of many people. The tale "The Little Prince" becomes, in the eyes of its readers and as they follow the growth stages of the friendly main character, in a journey that invites those who read it to explore their feelings and subconscious. 

6 – The Alchemist 

It tells the journey of a shepherd in search of gold in the pyramids of Egypt, Paulo Coelho's work is the Brazilian book most sold nationally and internationally. 

7 – She 

The Englishman H. Rider Haggard wrote the book "She", which tells the story of a Victorian professor and pupil travelling to Africa in search of a lost civilization, which was controlled by a mysterious sorcerer. 

8 – The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe 

It is mostly known for its adaptation to the movies as "The Chronicles of Narnia", it describes the adventures of the siblings Susana, Pedro, Edmundo, and Lucia. The work establishes a kind of mythology about creatures that inhabit lands beyond the wardrobe. 

9 – And Then There Were None

It is better known for the controversy involving its original title, the book addresses the story of 10 unknown people invited as guests to the small private island of Devon. The author is Agatha Christie, one of the leading names in mystery literature. 

10 – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 

It is the sixth book in J. K. Rowling's series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" tells the story of the most famous wizard of modernity and his journey of private lessons with Professor Dumbledore.
