Have you ever sat down to write and just... froze?
The ideas are there, but the words won’t come. The blank page (or screen) starts to feel like an unscalable wall. If you’ve been through this — and if you’re a writer, chances are you have — let me introduce you to a simple yet powerful technique: Free Writing.
Free Writing is a creative writing technique where you just write non-stop for a set amount of time, without worrying about grammar, coherence, or style.
It’s like turning on the faucet in your mind and letting the water (your words) flow freely, without filters. Sounds simple? It is. And that’s exactly why it works so well.
This technique was popularized by writers like Natalie Goldberg, author of Writing Down the Bones, and is still used today by beginners and experienced writers alike.
Unlocking creative block
Warming up your brain before a writing session
Discovering hidden ideas
Developing your unique writer’s voice
Fighting perfectionism (that annoying little monster)
It’s super easy. Here’s how:
Set a timer — Try 5, 10, or 15 minutes.
Choose a prompt… or not — You can start with a sentence, a question, an image… or nothing at all. Just begin.
Write without stopping — Don’t edit, don’t go back. If you don’t know what to write, type “I don’t know what to write” until something shows up. And it will.
Don’t judge — No one’s going to read this unless you want them to. This is just for you.
Grab a notebook or open a blank doc and write for 5 minutes using this prompt:
“What I really wanted to say was...”
Don’t overthink. Just go. I’ll wait.
...
Done?
Notice how your brain starts opening up? Often, after a few awkward lines, something unexpected comes out — and that’s when the real writing begins.
Here’s a raw excerpt from a free writing session I did using that exact prompt:
“What I really wanted to say was that I’m tired of writing with fear. Fear of not being good enough, of not pleasing others. But when I write just for me — no pressure, no rules — that’s when I hear my voice. Maybe free writing is that: a silent scream of our truth, just waiting to come out.”
It’s not perfect. But it’s honest.
And that’s the whole point.
Not every free writing session turns into a polished story — but hidden within them are seeds of something great.
After your session, go back and highlight interesting sentences, unexpected metaphors, or characters that showed up out of nowhere.
You might find the beginning of a blog post, a short story, a poem… or even your next book.
If you’ve been feeling stuck, try this technique for a week. Just 10 minutes a day. No pressure. No judgment. Then come back and tell me what happened — I bet you’ll surprise yourself.
And hey, if you want to turn those writings into a real book, you know where to go: epublik.com.br is here to help you publish with freedom, ease, and no gatekeepers. 😉
